Free camping at Tiparra Rocks
Looking for a free camping spot that is secluded, not far from Adelaide and offers a sandy beach that is great for fishing and swimmer friendly?
Try camping at Tiparra Rocks for exactly that and more!
Not only is there free camping at Tiparra Rocks, there is also room for caravans and day visitors. Many locals remark this as a secret fishing nook, although personally we don’t fish (yet). We like Tiparra Rocks because its a great beach to go swimming, it is shallow for the kids and there is plenty of soft sand for sun baking and making sand castles.
Tiparra Rocks is situated just 3.5 hours (170km) drive north from Adelaide on the west coast of the Yorke Peninsula. It is also just 6km north from a small town, Balgowan along a dirt track. It is well sign posted and not far from other popular camping spots such as The Gap and The Bamboos. In good weather the road is suitable for 2wd and caravans, just a little sandy, but can be quite rough after rain but would still be suitable for 4wds.
There are no facilities here though, so you will need to bring your own drinking water and firewood; and take your rubbish with you when you leave. There are only three (quite sandy) camp sites at Tiparra Rocks so be sure to get there early if you are going during popular times i.e. long weekends or summer school holidays. Be warned that sometimes it can be popular with dirt bikes, flies and snakes.
Camping at Tiparra Rocks is a great place if you just want to get away for two or three nights and when the weather is pleasant. During winter and spring it can be very windy and there is not much protection from the coastal front. The shrubs on the sand dunes are small and there are no trees for shade.
